Chromatic or
colour changing alginate
The picture shows A Lasting Impressions purple colour changing
formula. It starts out a light green powder then changes to a bright purple when
you add water then starts to lighten when you need to put the hand or foot in it
then finally ends up as a bright green telling you can take the hand or foot out
of the mould. It's ready to
cast.
Everything is non toxic, odorless (unless specified with flavouring),
hypo allergenic, silica free and dustless.
After testing many different types of Alginate, A Lasting Impression has chosen a very high quality alginate that you certainly can not buy at your local craft store, it is designed perfectly for taking your precious babies hand and foot castings and for all ages. Great for face and body casts |

What ever the casting stone or plaster that you use, I highly suggest not to use plaster of paris if you want your castings to last any length of time. Plaster of paris is very weak and brittle and is also more prone to mould growth over time.

The warmer the water the faster the alginate sets. This
water/time table is based on

not reccomended for container moulds |
Normal body temperature on average is 37° Celsius or 98.6° Fahrenheit
Most people especially babies don't like cold
alginate.
Set Times are also determined by mixing ratio
The good thing about alginate is the you don't have to have exact with measuring..
but keep in mind:
For bucket moulds: Hands/feet
If you mix it too thick you can get voids in the mould.
If you mix it too thin the mixture will have too many air bubbles.
Both causing outies that you will have to carve off of the casting.
More Water to alginate
makes it set slower |
Less water to alginate
powder makes it set faster |
Cooler rooms/body
temperature of model makes it set slower. |
Warmer room or body
temperature of model makes it set faster. |

Alginate is a powder made from seaweed. I mix it with warm water and it turns into a mixture like the consistency of extra thick cake batter, then after a minute or two (just enough time to mix it and put the hand or foot into it) it turns into a rubbery mould. Dentists use this product to take impressions of our teeth. When I first started my lifecasting business in 2003 the only alginate I could find was from dental distributors. These alginates were design for taking impressions of our teeth and have flavouring added to them plus the setting time was way too fast. The other problem was that it was very expensive.
